A CHILD IS BORN

A CHILD IS BORN
The essay “A Child Is Born” is written by Australian Feminist writer and Lecturer Germaine Greer. In this essay, the writer has presented comparisons between the parent-child relationship in the industrial society, the west and the agro-based society, the traditional east. The writer compares the role of children in traditional, agricultural societies with that of children in western, most developed countries.
The main theme of the essay is in the traditional society there are many good ways of helping women of time when they give birth. The modern methods of helping pregnant women are not necessarily better than traditional methods. In the traditional societies there are different ways of having babies. These methods are useful because having a baby per women is less frightening in her life.
When a woman is pregnant, she is covered with different taboos and prohibition which help her to reduce her pain. There are rituals are believes which make having a baby less frightening. According to custom, her husband, relatives and community support her which helps her to feel safe.

The Child Who Wait

THE CHILD WHO WAIT
The essay “The Child Who Wait” is written by Marsha Traugot. In this essay, she has suggested reasons for a new trend in adoption. For this she draws from specific research of history. The children who do not have parents need to be adopted by others families. This essay describes what was happening to children in the United States who do not have parents.
In the past, only white and healthy children could be adopted in the United States. No one wanted to look after the handicapped children and the children who have emotional problem. Now many people are unhappy to adopt such children. Tammy, a five and a half years old black child who is suffering from fatal Alcoholic syndrome has been legally free for adoption. White families began to adopt such black children. Now a wider variety of families can open their homes to children who in the past would have been labeled in-adaptable. In the past, children were adopted by only healthy, rich families. Minority and mixed racial children were virtually ignored. So, the children waited.
There are several reasons behind the change in the last two decayed. One important reason for the change in that different type of families wants to adopt the children. For e.g. an unmarried man might adopt a badly behaved fifteen years old boy and a religious people might adopt handicapped children.
Young girls who got pregnant use to give their children for adoption but now they are either having abortion or looking after the children themselves. Because of the civil right movement even the black children have been equally respected. The black civil right movement changed the attitude of people to the black children. There are no healthy children waiting to be adopted. Because of women’s movement together with birth control, legalized abortion, and changing attitude towards sexual behavior and marriage very few healthy children were available for adoption. Therefore, due to the scarcity of healthy children, people turn their attention to other babies.
Hence, the collective effort of different movement in order to maintain justice in the society especially on the case of adaptation is possible.
