THE LAST VOYAGE OF THE GHOST SHIP

THE LAST VOYAGE OF THE GHOST SHIP
The story “The Last Voyage of the Ghost Ship” is written by a well known Colombian Novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez. In this story the writer has described the growth of an ordinary boy to an assertive young man by the stream-of-consciousness technique.
The main character of this story is a young boy. The most magical element in this story is the ghost ship. Many years ago, the boy saw the ship for the first time which was end March at night. The things that the ship did were magical. Every March on one certain day, the ship would come and it never made a sound even when it crashed. Nobody of the village heard any noise from the ship when it crashed. It always came at night and would disappear when the beam of the light from the Colonial city hit it. The boy told to his mother about an incidence but she could not believe it. She thought that he was going to be out of mind or crazy.
Since, the death of his father, his mother spent most of the time sitting on an old chair. She took a small boat to go to the place where she could buy a new chair. The people in the village threw the chair into the sea by thinking that it was the symbol of death.
On the same night after a few years the boy was watching the sea in the month of March. He saw the same ship and made noise to wake the villagers up but by the time the ship has already broken and vanished on the sea. The villagers beat the boy for making disturbance. One year later, in March the boy takes a stolen boat to get near and was closer to it which did not have any light. So, the boy lit light on the boat which followed a red lantern and turn into a real ship. The ship looked magical as the boy described as “The largest ocean liner in this world, it was whiter than any thing, twenty times taller than the steeple and some ninety sever times longer than the village.” When the ship got close to the village, it blew with its loud whistle. All the people of the village got up because of the loud noise. The ship came onto the ground and stopped moving in front of the church. Now, the villagers believed that the boy was true.
